ITALY: Funding supports 4 Salesian projects

Humanitarian projects located in India, Angola, Ethiopia and Ukraine

ITALY

(MissionNewswire) The Salesian Lombard Educational Center in Sesto San Giovanni, Italy, has been raising funds for Salesian projects around the globe. Students, families, teachers and Salesians have raised 38,000 euro, which is supporting several humanitarian projects.

The funding was enough for Salesians to purchase a bus to transport 400 students from 30 villages in rural Sayalkudi, a village in Ramanathapuram district of the state of Tamil Nadu, India. The bus ensures even children from the poorest families are able to access education.

The funds are also contributing to the construction and preparation of a mechanics workshop at the Casa Muxima Center in Luanda, Angola. Youth who attend this school have a safe place to live and are able to access basic education. They then attend three years of vocational training so they can learn the skills for employment.

In Ethiopia*, funding provided support for the Meskelle Yesus Salesian Elementary School in Dilla, which offers poor youth a quality education. Students also receive a meal each day and necessary health and hygiene education. The funding will replace current bathrooms which are insufficient for the 1,000 students who attend the school.

The funding also helped support projects in Ukraine*. A Salesian explained, “The funding contributed to the creation of a multifunctional space to be used as a shelter and to the various activities organized by the Salesians in Kiev in support of people who are internally displaced. When the war is over, Salesians already have plans to convert the shelter into a small underground theater.”

Salesian programs across Italy help youth who are unable to attend school and others who drop out to work at the few jobs available to them. A growing number of children work as laborers on farms and others have turned to the sex trade to help support their families. Those in poverty often live without adequate shelter, hot water, regular meals and health care.
