GLOBAL: Salesian Missions launches its annual ‘Loaves and Fishes’ fundraiser to support critical aid shipments to programs around the globe

Salesian Missions recently launched its annual Loaves and Fishes fundraiser which raises funds to ship life-saving aid to more than 130 countries around the globe. Because the cost of shipping this critical aid is far less than its value, donations are multiplied many times over. For every dollar donated, Salesian Missions is able to ship $14 worth of critical goods to its programs. The fundraising appeal runs through the end of June 2020.

PERU: Salesians offer courtyard of the Provincial House in Breña for migrants during the pandemic

Father José Valdivia, provincial economer, has offered the courtyard of the Salesian Provincial House, located in the Breña neighborhood, Lima, Peru, to welcome migrants in need until the COVID-19 pandemic is over. About 90 Haitians were unable to travel to Ecuador because of the emergency medical declaration in Peru. They were left with the only option of sleeping in the streets. Now, they have been settled on the grounds of the Provincial House.

MEXICO: Salesian Padre Chava Refectory in Tijuana remains open to serve thousands of take-away meals to those in need

The sudden spread of the COVID-19 in Mexico brought an unseen state of emergency to Tijuana. Salesian missionaries are assisting thousands of people at risk through the Salesian Padre Chava Refectory. The refectory provides meals and other assistance to migrants from Mexico, Central America and Haiti, as well as to homeless people, the elderly, people with disabilities and those suffering from extreme poverty. Because of the overwhelming need, the refectory cannot close. They have instead turned to take-away meals. In the first day, 500 food boxes were distributed. Over the next six days, 10,000 food boxes were provided.

EL SALVADOR: Don Bosco University praised for development of LEED Lab for Prosthetics and Orthotics Technical Program with funding secured by Salesian Missions from USAID-ASHA

The “Walking Anew!” project in San Salvador, El Salvador, which runs from March 2017 to March 2021, is expanding and upgrading the facilities at Don Bosco University’s School of Rehabilitation Science as well as the equipment used to train medical rehabilitation professionals. The project will also pioneer innovative techniques in the treatment of people with disabilities. This project was made possible thanks to a grant from USAID’s American Schools and Hospitals Abroad (ASHA) program secured by Salesian Missions, the U.S. development arm of the Salesians of Don Bosco.

INTERNATIONAL MIGRANTS DAY: Salesian Missions highlights social and educational programs assisting young migrants

Salesian Missions, the U.S. development arm of the Salesians of Don Bosco, joins humanitarian organizations and the international community in honoring International Migrants Day. Each year, International Migrants Day is held on Dec. 18 to recognize the efforts, contributions and rights of migrants worldwide. Unaccompanied migrant youth often face rejection, homelessness, exploitation and delinquency as they make their journey to find a new way of life. They are also at risk of human trafficking and exploitation. To mark International Migrants Day 2019, Salesian Missions is proud to highlight programs around the globe that provide life-changing education and social support to young migrants.

Life-saving meals are ready for those who need them most. Salesian Missions needs donor help to transport the meals from shipping docks to Salesian program locations around the globe.
