SPAIN: Salesian Vocational Training Center in Pamplona hosts event about ‘Cradles that Save Lives’ project
More than 300 incubators have been delivered around the world

(MissionNewswire) The Salesian Vocational Training Center in Pamplona, Spain, hosted the “Technical Days on Mechanization”, a two-day event held in June, which focused on the work that the “Cradles that Save Lives” project.
Teachers from Salesian vocational training centers in 11 cities took part and shared the work carried out so far. They also discussed future possibilities for collaboration with the Medicine Open to the World organization.
The project was launched at the Salesian Vocational Training Center in Pamplona in 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, and was subsequently extended to Salesian centers across Spain during the 2021–2022 academic year. To date, 15 Salesian centers have joined the project.
The project is providing life-saving incubators for premature babies or those in need of special care. More than 300 cradles have already been produced and delivered to 37 countries around the world, primarily in African nations such as Senegal, Zambia, Chad, Cape Verde, Mozambique, and Cameroon. The latest six cradles were taken to refugee camps in the Sahara. The incubators from this project have also reached Asia and the Americas.
The incubators are low-cost, feature an innovative design and are made from affordable materials. They are produced in collaboration with students at Salesian vocational training centers.
During the presentation of the event, José Luis Villota Cosío, principal of the Salesian Vocational Training Center in Pamplona, highlighted the importance in sharing processes and methodology, and the intrinsic value of helping students realize their work has enormous significance for people.
A Salesian explained, “The two-day event served to discuss the challenges and opportunities each center has faced in manufacturing the incubators, as well as in securing funding. Teachers also learned about changes that have been implemented to produce an improved incubator model.”
