GLOBAL: Projects improve care for people with disabilities in Mexico and El Salvador

Thanks to funding Salesian Missions received from the U.S. Agency for International Development’s American Schools and Hospitals Abroad (USAID/ASHA) program, Salesian missionaries have been able to launch building projects to improve the standard of medical care for people in El Salvador and Mexico. The projects are a mix of construction, equipment purchases and training to improve health care outcomes for people with physical disabilities.

INT’L DAY OF PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES: Salesian Missions highlights programs that provide education and support for people with disabilities

Salesian Missions joins humanitarian organizations and countries around the globe in honoring International Day of People with Disabilities. In 1981, the U.N. proclaimed Dec. 3 as a recognized day for the celebration of the achievements of people living with disabilities across the world. This year’s theme “Fighting for rights in the post-COVID era” focuses on the challenges, barriers and opportunities for people who live with disabilities, in the context of a global pandemic.

EL SALVADOR: New building receives sustainable construction award

Don Bosco University in San Salvador, El Salvador, is empowering the next generation of medical rehabilitation practitioners to transform the lives of people with mobile disabilities through its “Walking Anew!” project. This project was made possible thanks to a grant from the U.S. Agency for International Development’s American Schools and Hospitals Abroad (USAID-ASHA) program secured by Salesian Missions. The annex building, which houses a laboratory and research building for people with mobility disabilities, recently won the Sustainable Construction Award granted by the Salvadoran Chamber of Construction (CASALCO) in the medium project category.

THAILAND: DiBosco Coffee provides youth an opportunity to learn and gain valuable work experience

DiBosco Coffee, located in Chiang Mai, Thailand, is an initiative launched by Mr. Phaisan, who graduated from Don Bosco Technical School in Bangkok 20 years ago. Since then, Phaisan has focused his life on the three things he loves most—coffee, serving the poor and supporting Don Bosco initiatives. Today, Phaisan is operating DiBosco Coffee in an effort to help youth in need. Peter Kováč, a Salesian past pupil, is the co-founder of the DiBosco Coffee project and engaged in seeing the business grow.

GLOBAL: More children at risk of life-threatening malnutrition due to COVID-19, says new global report

Worldwide, an additional 6.7 million children under the age of 5 could suffer from a severe malnutrition known as “wasting” before the end of 2020, said humanitarian leaders who analyzed the COVID-19 crisis and its risks to childhood malnutrition.
