(MissionNewswire) Staff and students from Don Bosco Junior College, located in Yerwada, Pune, India, in collaboration with the organization Being Volunteer, participated in a tree planting drive in the Mahalunge forest land. The event, which took place on July 15, aimed to instill a passion for sustainability and a desire to make the world a better place.

Being Volunteer believes everyone has an innate desire to do something for another. It seeks to foster a culture of volunteerism to build a nation where all people collaborate to create a beautiful world. Volunteers from the organization dug pits and completed the initial preparation while 134 students and 11 teachers planted 500 saplings.

Ajinkya Parke, the captain of Don Bosco Junior College, said, “I am fortunate to be a part of this mission and will continue to be a part of such important and interesting projects in the future.” Another student, Rachael Ullagaddi, added, “The tree plantation drive gives the feeling of accomplishing something worthwhile. Even in small ways, we can make a difference for the environment. It feels good to know that I helped the Earth.”

The tree planting drive also helped students understand the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), which are the blueprint for achieving a better and more sustainable future for all. SDG 11 aims to “Make cities and human settlements more inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.” SDG 15 seeks to “Protect, restore, and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, halt and reverse land degradation, and halt biodiversity loss.”

Kailas Narwade, the founder of Being Volunteer, praised Don Bosco Junior College for incorporating green initiative projects into youth outreach activities. The students enjoyed a day in nature as they learned life lessons outside the classroom. The students were also taught a tree dance, a fun activity they enjoyed.
