ETHIOPIA: Don Bosco Institute celebrates graduation for 400 students
Institute empowers youth with practical skills for life, work
(MissionNewswire) The Don Bosco Catholic Technical and Vocational Training Institute at Bosco Children in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia*, held a graduation ceremony for 400 students. This marks the 30th graduation of the training institute.
A Salesian noted, “The institute is committed to creating and preparing youth for employment through effective technical and vocational education. The education is in high demand due to the effectiveness and quality and continues to empower youth by equipping them with practical skills for life and work.”
Currently, the institute offers education courses in furniture making, metalwork, leatherwork, basic IT, and hairdressing and barber skills. Salesians are also taking steps to obtain the necessary license to expand programs in the near future to include infant care, urban agriculture, beekeeping, poultry farming, livestock farming and agro-processing, such as the production of dairy products, including butter and cheese.
Ethiopia is one of the poorest countries in the world with more than 38% of its population living in poverty, according to Feed the Future. Close to 85% of the country’s workforce is employed in agriculture, but frequent droughts severely affect the agricultural economy leaving more than 12 million people chronically, or at least periodically, food insecure. In addition, more than two-thirds of the population is illiterate.
