Equipment enables fishermen to resume work

(MissionNewswire) The Salesian San Felipe Neri community and the Salesian Project of Costa Norte Foundation through its office in Esmeraldas, Ecuador, have distributed fishing equipment to a number of fishermen along the banks of the Esmeraldas River. The official donation distribution took place at the Mother of the Saviour Reference Center.

The initiative responds to the urgent needs of informal Indigenous fishermen whose livelihoods have been severely affected by the infestation of the black crab, which has significantly reduced fishing activity and has had a serious impact on the economy of dozens of families in the province.

A Salesian explained, “For many households, fishing is the primary source of income, making the decline in catches a direct threat to their daily sustenance and economic stability. Through this intervention, we are providing support that will enable fishermen to resume their work and gradually restore their livelihoods.”

The equipment was presented by Father Marco Paredes, vice rector of the Salesian community, together with Samuel Lozada, project technician of the foundation. During the ceremony, they reaffirmed their commitment to supporting local communities in their recovery process, with particular attention to those living in situations of greater vulnerability.

The initiative was made possible thanks to the support of the German Pöschl Foundation, which is dedicated to social welfare activities. The foundation’s contribution has enabled assistance to reach families in need, promoting sustainable local development and offering renewed hope to communities affected by the crisis.

Salesians provide social development and educational programs across Ecuador to help youth who are poor gain an education and the skills for later employment. The skills they learn ensure they are able to care for themselves and their families while being contributing members of their communities.
