ZAMBIA: 3 Salesian communities receive donor funding for solar backup thanks to Salesian Missions
Project improves energy reliability
(MissionNewswire) Salesian missionaries received donor funding for solar backup for three communities thanks to Salesian Missions, the U.S. development arm of the Salesians of Don Bosco. The Salesian communities are in Kabwe, Zambia; Nkhotakota, Malawi; and Hwange, Zimbabwe*.
The new solar power has improved energy reliability and reduced reliance on grid power and generators. Each community has five Salesians and the novitiate community in Zambia has around 30 novices. Lay staff and youth who access the Salesian communities also benefited.
The solar backup systems installed consist of an inverter, three batteries and eight solar panels. Socket outlets and key electrical points were connected, enabling immediate use. Local operation and maintenance training was provided, and maintenance partnerships were established to support long-term functionality. In addition, a scalable model with clear governance, financing and replication pathways was developed for neighboring communities.
Brother Kenny, in Nkhotakota, was responsible for implementing the solar project. The community environment is strongly influenced by fishing, small-scale farming and trade along local routes. People rely on crops such as maize and groundnuts, as well as fishing, fish processing, and informal markets. Terrain can be uneven with flood-prone areas near the lake, making transport and services difficult during rainy seasons. Those living in the region have limited access to reliable electricity, high energy costs, frequent power shortages, and dependence on firewood and charcoal. Poor infrastructure and scattered settlements increase energy insecurity.
Brother Kenny explained, “The solar system helps power essential facilities and activities, ensuring that daily operations continue even during power interruptions. By adopting solar power, the center is not only improving its operational efficiency but also demonstrating environmental responsibility and sustainability. Overall, the project plays an important role in supporting the mission of the institution by creating a more stable and sustainable environment for staff, students, and the wider community.”
