UKRAINE: School expands to help educate youth who are displaced

New space to be used for high school classrooms
(MissionNewswire) Salesian missionaries have continued their work in the Salesian community in Odessa, Ukraine*, despite the war. To meet the growing needs for education, including those of students who have been displaced, construction has started on an additional floor to be used for high school classrooms. Re-roofing of the entire school building is also taking place.
A Salesian explained, “The old roof was badly weathered and the school needed new space. Given the growing demand, increased by the presence of those who have been displaced from other areas of the country, we decided to open a high school to be added to the elementary and middle schools, which have been operating for many years.”
The goal is to build a large Salesian school center in the middle of Odessa’s working-class neighborhoods that are populated by youth eager to study. The project is a Salesian-funded project but faces challenges.
The Salesian noted, “There remains the concern of how to continue to fund the project given the constant increase in the cost of construction in Ukraine. We are hoping that donors will help to support this endeavor.”
During the more than three years of war, Salesian missionaries in Ukraine and nearby countries have supported thousands of people with projects and activities aimed at alleviating the situation of victims andpeople affected by the war.
