UKRAINE: Salesians launch appeal to provide fuel for center serving people who are displaced

The Salesian Missionary Center in Warsaw, Poland, has been serving Ukrainian refugees and supporting people still in the country since the beginning of the Russian invasion four years ago.

Lack of power becomes humanitarian emergency in winter

(MissionNewswire) The Salesian Missionary Center in Warsaw, Poland, has been serving Ukrainian refugees and supporting people still in the country since the beginning of the Russian invasion four years ago. With winter, power cuts become a humanitarian emergency. The most vulnerable people, including children, the elderly and the chronically ill, are most affected without electricity, heating, hot water and light.

The Daughters of Mary Help of Christians and the Salesians of Don Bosco in Ukraine* have transformed houses, oratories and youth centers into shelters for displaced families. There, they can receive hot meals and access psychological support and prayer, while youth can attend school. In many cities, Salesian facilities have become the only place where stability and support can be found.

A Salesian explained, “The only source of energy at these facilities is often a single generator, which can only operate if there is fuel. Relying on a generator is essential for activities such as cooking and distributing meals, charging phones and medical devices, providing evening lighting, and storing medicines at a controlled temperature. When the tank is empty, everything stops.”

The Salesian Missionary Center launched an online campaign to raise funds to purchase fuel, cover transport costs to the most affected areas and build up emergency reserves. The distribution of aid will be adapted to the current situation in different regions of the country, based on the intensity of power outages.

Contributing to the purchase of fuel means assuring those in need have the electricity they need for cooking, heating and lights. The Salesian noted, “We continue to support the Salesians in Ukraine, so that they can provide electricity, heat and safety where they are most needed today.”

Since the beginning of the war, Salesian Missions and Salesian missionaries in Ukraine and around the globe have supported thousands of people with projects and activities aimed at alleviating the situation of people affected by the war.
