Majority of students face socio-economic challenges

(MissionNewswire) Salesian missionaries in Rwanda were able to provide startup toolkits for youth who are vulnerable in three Don Bosco vocational and technical training schools thanks to donor funding from Salesian Missions, the U.S. development arm of the Salesians of Don Bosco.

The schools are Don Bosco Rango, Don Bosco Gatenga and Don Bosco Muhazi. The donation impacted 420 students, the majority of whom are aged 16-24 and come from disadvantaged backgrounds. Many are single mothers and youth facing socio-economic challenges such as poverty, early pregnancies, and limited access to formal employment. 

After receiving training in entrepreneurship, the toolkits empowered students to enter the labor market, generate income and begin addressing pressing family needs. Tailoring students received sewing machines and accessories, while those enrolled in welding, plumbing and masonry trades were provided with complete kits and attire essential for the workforce. 

Sister Nyanzira Leocadie of Don Bosco Muhazi shared, “Empowering our youth with the right tools and skills transforms lives and communities. Supported by our partners, we are turning challenges into opportunities for a brighter future.”

Father Gatete Innocent of Don Bosco Rango said, “With the support of our partners and the determination of our students, we are shaping a future where opportunity and hope are accessible to all.”

For single mothers, the support proved transformative. With the ability to earn a livelihood, they are now better able to provide food and essential care for their children, improving household stability and fostering hope for a more secure future.

Patience Uwimana is one of the students impacted. She is a young single mother who was part of the tailoring course and received a sewing machine. She said, “The impact of this support goes beyond mere tools. It ignites hope and confidence and a path toward independence and success.”

Salesian missionaries provide a range of educational and social development services in Rwanda. Youth who are poor are able to access programs including health services, nutrition, education and general support services that help them to lead healthy productive lives. Salesians first arrived in the country in 1953. Today, there are six Salesian centers in Rwanda.
