(MissionNewswire) Salesian missionaries in 23 oratories in the Salesian Province of Southern Italy, in Campania, Basilicata, Puglia and Calabria, are ensuring that youth have access to safe and fun summer programs. A recent survey conducted by Father Giuseppe Russo, provincial delegate for Youth Ministry, found that there were more than 7,000 participants at the Salesian summer camps held in June and July. These youth range from second to eighth grades. Another 1,350 youth, aged 14-25, took part in educational courses.

Aurora, a leader at the oratory in Lecce, said, “Our Summer for the Kids program is not just a way to occupy the summer time, it is a space for play, authentic encounters, values and education. During this experience, youth learn to collaborate, follow common rules, contribute to the group and very often discover new things about themselves, overcoming their small and large limitations. In short, by getting involved, everyone learns something and discovers new potential and abilities that characterize them.”

These activities would not be possible without the 1,733 teen and young adults who help plan and facilitate the activities. More than 500 adults also help to support this network of summer experiences, ensuring and safeguarding the smooth running of each day.

Aurora added, “The leader understands more and more how their educational role is not simply limited to imposing rules, but to being there. They discover a vocation to service, where the beauty of relationships and the shared educational goal stand out. Christian values come to life and take shape in everyday life, not through sermons, but through daily prayer and true witness.”

Fr. Russo noted, “The survey we conducted paints a picture of lively and dynamic oratories and programs that offer spaces where education and evangelization intertwine naturally with the joy and vitality typical of Salesian courtyards.”
