Don Bosco Training Center partners with Schaeffler India to provide EV maintenance training

INDIA

(MissionNewswire) Don Bosco Training Center, located in Pimpri-Chinchwad, Pune, India, has partnered with Schaeffler India for a new initiative to train disadvantaged youth in the field of electric vehicle (EV) maintenance, according to an article in Mobility Outlook. The program is part of the Schaeffler Technical Enhancement Program (STEP).

Youth, ages 18-24, will undergo a six-month training course that will focus on EV battery maintenance, auto electrics and electronics, and computer numerical control. The article noted that these modules will prepare students to qualify as EV service technicians, mechanics of automotive electrical parts, and electronics and computer numerical control programmers. The training will culminate in a certification from the National Skill Development Corporation.

In the article, Harsha Kadam, managing director and chief executive officer of Schaeffler India, said, “This STEP Center will enhance Schaeffler India’s dedication to enabling social inclusion and equal opportunities by empowering our future — the under-represented youth.”

India has the world’s fourth largest economy but more than 22% of the country lives in poverty. About 31% of the world’s multidimensionally poor children live in India, according to a report by the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative.

India’s youth face a lack of educational opportunities due to issues of caste, class and gender. Almost 44% of the workforce is illiterate and less than 10% of the working-age population has completed a secondary education. In addition, many secondary school graduates do not have the knowledge and skills to compete in today’s changing job market.
