(MissionNewswire) Salesian missionaries are celebrating 100 years of service in Northeast India. The celebration included an event initiated by Don Bosco School Excellence Mission in Guwahati, which brought together 125 students from 23 different schools in the states of Assam and Meghalaya for a series of competitions and activities.

The event was held at Don Bosco School in the Panbazar District, Guwahati. Father Joseph Mung, vice principal of the school, welcomed the participants and the authorities who attended. Father Januarius Sangma, provincial superior of the Mary Help of Christians Province of Guwahati, also took part in the initiative. He expressed his happiness to see so many youth gathered together to pay homage to Don Bosco and to commemorate the 100-year anniversary.

The students were able to celebrate and interact with one any other, showcasing their skills in singing, dancing, drawing, music, writing, and oratory arts. It was also a time of learning and growth for youth from diverse backgrounds and areas. The event was enriching and educational for all.

At the end of the competitions, Father Benny P. Basil, provincial economer, presented prizes and certificates to the winners. Don Bosco High School was the overall winner of the event and took home the trophy. In a speech, Fr. Basil highlighted the importance of in-person interactions for students who often are consumed by a digital world. He also praised the work of Don Bosco School Excellence Mission for organizing and executing the day’s program.

“Events like this are a great way for students to come together and showcase their talents,” said Father Gus Baek, director of Salesian Missions, the U.S. development arm of the Salesians of Don Bosco. “While helping youth to gain an education is our primary focus, we want to make sure that students are well-rounded and are able to excel at their talents and interests.”

Salesian programs in India are primarily focused on education. Salesian primary and secondary education helps youth prepare for later technical, vocational or university study. Other programs help to support poor youth and their families by meeting the basic needs of shelter, proper nutrition and medical care.
