(MissionNewswire) The Don Bosco Job Placement Network and the Don Bosco Salesian Institute in Kokar, near Ranchi, India, organized a labor fair for the city’s youth. The event was attended by 12 companies that offered more than 1,000 job opportunities.

A Salesian noted, “The goal was to open a door to a brighter future, offering young people fundamental job opportunities. We wanted to make it easier for them to connect with employers who had jobs available in their fields while giving companies the access to well-qualified graduates.”

The fair was organized in collaboration with the District Employment Exchange office in Ranchi and with the Catholic Youth Movement of the Archdiocese of Ranchi.

“Salesian educational programs focus on helping vulnerable youth by providing access to educational opportunities that match the local employment needs,” said Father Michael Conway, director of Salesian Missions, the U.S. development arm of the Salesians of Don Bosco. “Around the globe, there are nearly 1,000 Salesian vocational, technical, professional and agricultural schools serving vulnerable and poor youth.”

Access to professional training and workforce development services is highly valued in India. While India has the world’s largest youth population, it has yet to capitalize on this, leaving some 30% of this population without employment, education or training.

India’s youth face a lack of educational opportunities due to issues of caste, class and gender. Almost 44% of the workforce is illiterate and less than 10% of the working-age population has completed a secondary education. In addition, many secondary school graduates do not have the knowledge and skills to compete in today’s changing job market.
