INDIA: Women graduate from tailoring course with skills, self-esteem

New candidates registered following pilot program
(MissionNewswire) Don Bosco Veedu, located in Thiruvananthapuram in the state of Kerala, India, has graduated seven women from a three-month tailoring course under the Tigress Program, which stands for resiliency and emancipation. The graduates learned new tailoring skills while gaining a strong sense of solidarity and self-esteem. The initiative was jointly organized by the Salesian Cooperators and Don Bosco Veedu.
Students learned sewing skills by creating a variety of garments, including blouses, tops and baby clothes. Of the 10 women enrolled, seven completed the course and were honored during the closing ceremony, which celebrated both skills development and community empowerment.
A Salesian explained, “The impact of the program goes beyond the classroom. Inspired by the success of the pilot group, new candidates have registered for the next session, which is scheduled to start later this month. The program not only promotes self-reliance, but also strengthens the Salesian commitment to supporting marginalized communities through education and empowerment.”
Don Bosco Veedu recently opened to provide skills training and development activities in Thiruvananthapuram. It will also extend the existing interventions in the city and the state of Kerala for people who are marginalized, as well as act as a social work coordinating center for the state.
Access to professional training and workforce development services is highly valued in India. While India has the world’s largest youth population, it has yet to capitalize on this, leaving some 30% of this population without employment, education or training.
