INDIA: Teachers commit to success for students with learning disorders

Salesians hold seminar for primary, secondary and junior college school educators
(MissionNewswire) Teachers from the primary, secondary and junior college schools within Don Bosco Naigaon, located in Mumbai, India, participated in a seminar on specific learning disorders. The seminar was led by Father Edward D’Souza, an educator specializing in learning disorders. According to Fr. D’Souza, globally about 10-15% of the school population is affected, and he helped provide understanding in working with these students.
The teachers participated in a series of simulation exercises, which helped them experience the challenges faced by students. Fr. D’Souza explained how specific learning disorders are neurological disorders caused by differences in the structure of the brain, which affects the way information is processed and which can have an impact on one or more skills.
A Salesian said, “The seminar ended with teachers becoming more aware of specific learning disorders and left the seminar with a renewed commitment to extending understanding, patience, support and appropriate recovery to ensure the success of all students during their school life.”
India has the world’s fourth largest economy but more than 22% of the country lives in poverty. About 31% of the world’s multidimensionally poor children live in India, according to a report by the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative.
India’s youth face a lack of educational opportunities due to issues of caste, class and gender. Almost 44% of the workforce is illiterate and less than 10% of the working-age population has completed a secondary education. In addition, many secondary school graduates do not have the knowledge and skills to compete in today’s changing job market.
Salesian programs across India are primarily focused on education. Salesian primary and secondary education in the country helps youth prepare for later technical, vocational or university study. Other programs help to support poor youth and their families by meeting the basic needs of shelter, proper nutrition and medical care.
