Event one of many environmentally driven initiatives at Salesian schools

INDIA

(MissionNewswire) The Cauveri Planning and Development Office of the Salesian Tiruchy Province in India organized an event to inspire youth about the importance of water conservation. Activities aimed to educate them on sustainable practices for efficient water use, fostering a more environmentally conscious future. There were 140 water conservation club members from six Salesian educational institutions who took part in the visit to Don Bosco Thanjavur and Sengipatti Agri-farm.

The day commenced with activities which gave students a chance to exhibit creativity and their knowledge, along with a sense of teamwork and enthusiasm. The winners were awarded prizes and a stationery kit was given to each participant as a token of encouragement.

Students also received a guided tour of the agri-field school and were shown as demonstration of water conservation techniques. Students witnessed various methods like drip irrigation, sprinkle irrigation, green house mist irrigation, and terrace and ground level rainwater harvesting systems.

A Salesian explained, “The huge rainwater harvesting pond had a solar-powered motor system through which the water is irrigated. Seeing it inspired students and left a strong impression on them. They were thrilled and captivated by the newer and innovative methods. They also explored the eco-friendly farm, discovering various tree species, herbal plants, and agricultural practices, and they enjoyed observing peacocks, other tiny birds, butterflies and beetles.”

He added, “The program was a great success, blending education with practical knowledge. Not only did it raise awareness about water conservation, but it also inspired the young participants to become champions for water sustainability in their communities.”

This event is among many environmentally driven initiatives that Salesian colleges, schools, and centers in India and around the globe have undertaken in the last few years. Many of these efforts are in response to Pope Francis’ 2020 Laudato Si’, the theme of which was “Good Christians and Upright Citizens.” In the document, Pope Francis emphasized the importance of education and training in helping youth foster environmental responsibility.
