INDIA: Students track birds as part of global initiative

Annual effort contributes valuable information, trend monitoring
(MissionNewswire) Students at Don Bosco University in Assam, India, recently took part in the Campus Bird Count, a unique citizen science initiative aimed at documenting bird species found in educational institutions, research campuses, nongovernmental organizations’ premises and other green spaces. It is an integral part of the Great Backyard Bird Count, a global effort that engages thousands of birdwatchers in recording and monitoring bird species annually.
On Feb. 14, students conducted the Campus Bird Count 8.0 led by Dr. Biswajit Chakdar, assistant professor in the department of zoology, along with alumni of the department. Before the bird count, Chakdar provided a detailed briefing on how to use the eBird application for real-time data entry and checklist submission. He also explained the importance of the initiative and how regular bird observations help in understanding long-term population trends and habitat preferences. A total of 88 participants took part in the event including five alumni.
A Salesian noted, “During the event, 20 bird checklists were uploaded on eBird. The survey recorded a total of 55 bird species, including both wetland and terrestrial birds, showcasing the rich avian diversity of the mosaic habitat of Tapesia Campus. The Campus Bird Count 8.0 was a resounding success, engaging students, faculty, and alumni in birdwatching, biodiversity conservation, and citizen science participation.”
This event is among many environmentally driven initiatives that Salesian colleges, schools, and centers in India and around the globe have undertaken in the last few years. Many of these efforts are in response to Pope Francis’ 2020 Laudato Si’, the theme of which was “Good Christians and Upright Citizens.” In the document, Pope Francis emphasized the importance of education and training in helping youth foster environmental responsibility.
