INDIA: Students, staff plant more than 300 tree saplings

Don Bosco College cultivates environmental stewardship in the community
(MissionNewswire) Don Bosco Cares for Our Common Home, part of Don Bosco College Yelagiri Hills in Tamil Nadu, India, organized the Mega Tree Plantation Drive. This initiative encouraged students, staff, and stakeholders to take responsibility for the environment and contribute toward building a sustainable future.
The entire community came together to plant 300 tree saplings including teak, water apple, mahogany and rosewood. The saplings were planted strategically on the college campus in the surrounding area to restore and protect nature.
A Salesian said, “This tree planting drive significantly enhanced the greenery of the campus and its neighboring areas, creating an immediate visual impact and setting the foundation for long-term environmental benefits. Beyond planting trees, the event was a call to action, inspiring all stakeholders to become proactive guardians of the environment.”
He added, “Through this initiative, Don Bosco College not only aims to nurture these trees but also to cultivate a lasting sense of environmental stewardship among its students and the larger community. This collective commitment underscores the college’s vision to contribute meaningfully to a greener and more sustainable future for generations to come.”
India’s youth face a lack of educational opportunities due to issues of caste, class and gender. Almost 44% of the workforce is illiterate and less than 10% of the working-age population has completed a secondary education. In addition, many secondary school graduates do not have the knowledge and skills to compete in today’s changing job market. Salesians provide a range of education and social programs to help support youth and their families.
