INDIA: Students graduate from psychological empowerment program

Year-long program focuses on children from tribal communities
(MissionNewswire) The Niraivu Psychological Empowerment Program held a graduation ceremony at the Don Bosco Evening Study Center in Thalavadi, India. The graduation marked the culmination of a year-long program for 87 tribal children from 15 villages and also highlighted the work of their teachers.
A Salesian said, “The graduation served as a platform to celebrate the achievements, acknowledge the efforts, and encourage the continued progress of these children and their teachers. The function aimed to foster a sense of pride and belonging, while reinforcing the importance of holistic personality development within the tribal community.”
Throughout the graduation, youth were encouraged to pursue their dreams. Speeches by educators and well-wishers, the distribution of participation certificates and mementos, and appreciation of the sponsors were part of the ongoing support for tribal communities.
The Salesian added, “The event served as a testament to the dedication of the organizers and the resilience of the tribal community. It is hoped that the momentum generated will contribute to the continued progress and empowerment of tribal children by Don Bosco mission in the Nilgiris region.”
Salesians understand that mental health is as important as physical health. Programs like this encourage youth to understand themselves better and support them in challenges that they might be facing now and in the future.
In India, Salesians provide a range of education and social development programs for youth and their families. They work to mitigate the devastating effects of poverty for these families.
India’s youth face a lack of educational opportunities due to issues of caste, class and gender. Almost 44% of the workforce is illiterate and less than 10% of the working-age population has completed a secondary education. In addition, many secondary school graduates do not have the knowledge and skills to compete in today’s changing job market.
