INDIA: Social work hub opens to reach more people with services

Don Bosco Veedu will help empower youth and women
(MissionNewswire) The Bangalore Rural Educational and Development Society (BREADS) has opened Don Bosco Veedu in Thiruvananthapuram in the state of Kerala, India, to provide skills training and social support for youth who are marginalized. It will also act as a social work coordinating center for the state. BREADS received financial assistance from JuWe in Switzerland.
Since 2001, BREADS has supported efforts of Don Bosco Manacaud, including rescue and rehabilitation interventions, community health, skills training for youth and women empowerment, slum development, migrant services, and addiction prevention programs.
Don Bosco Manacaud, founded in 1991 in Trivandrum, has been reaching out to children and youth on the street through various services including Childline hotlines, an exclusive Railway Childline to protect children at railway stations, and two rehabilitation centers that offer education and skills training. Salesians expanded their work with education classes for others living in poverty and to promote skills training among youth and women.
To impact even more people, the Don Bosco Veedu hub will promote development activities and skills training programs in Thiruvananthapuram. The work will also significantly extend the existing interventions to more areas in the city as well as the state of Kerala.
A Salesian explained, “As a coordinating center of social work for the state of Kerala, the center will facilitate all the networking programs as a social service center to empower youth and women through various initiatives, including vocational skill training, a counseling center and a migrant help desk.”
JuWe’s partnership and the dedicated involvement of the local Don Bosco community has been important in making the center a reality. In partnership with the local Don Bosco community, BREADS plans to expand services that will positively impact thousands of youth in need in Kerala.
