INDIA: Salesians construct new chapel in Monchong village thanks to donor funding from Salesian Missions

Construction brings villagers and parishioners together
(MissionNewswire) Salesian missionaries had the funding to construct a new chapel in Monchong village, located in Shallang in the state of Meghalaya, India, thanks to donor funding from Salesian Missions, the U.S. development arm of the Salesians of Don Bosco. The construction of the new chapel has been a significant milestone for the community.
A Salesian noted, “The chapel provides the faithful with a dignified and permanent place to gather for the Holy Eucharist, prayer, receiving Sacraments and community celebrations. But it’s so much more than that. It also serves as a center for youth meetings and gatherings, family prayers, and catechism classes, offering youth and families a nurturing environment to grow in Christian values.”
The construction brought together the villagers and parishioners in a spirit of collaboration while contributing labor and resources. With the chapel in place, the parish priest and catechists can now more effectively reach out, providing catechesis, sacraments, and faith formation programs.
The Salesian added, “The chapel stands as a visible sign of God’s presence in the village, inspiring not only Catholics but also members of other faiths to appreciate the values of peace, unity and prayer. It has also strengthened the bonds of community and faith, in line with the mission of Don Bosco to bring God closer to the young and the poor.”
Subit Sangma, head catechist, said, “Before, we did not have a proper place for worship. We used temporary sheds or people’s houses, which could not always hold everyone, especially during big feasts. It was difficult to keep the faith life organized without a proper chapel. I was excited, but also a little worried about whether it could be completed, since we are a poor village. But seeing everyone come together — priests, benefactors and villagers — gave me courage and joy.”
