INDIA: Salesian missionaries provide school supplies for 2,000 youth impacted by devastating flooding
Students receive school kits to help them focus on studies
(MissionNewswire) Salesian missionaries with Bosco Gramin Vikas Kendra traveled to the flood-affected areas of Assam, India, to support students whose education had been disrupted by flooding. The initiative was carried out in collaboration with AIDA Don Bosco in Dimapur, which provided support for on-site distribution.
Summer rains in Assam caused flooding in more than 2,600 villages, killing more than 100 people and leaving thousands homeless. A Salesian explained, “When floods disrupt a child’s life, the impact often goes beyond immediate losses and damage. Rucksacks, exercise books and basic school supplies — simple items that form part of a child’s everyday school life — can be lost or become difficult for families to replace.”
Over the course of two days, the initiative reached around 2,000 students affected by the floods in more than 25 schools. The children were given school kits containing workbooks and other stationery items. The distribution also provided an opportunity to meet students and teachers and to see firsthand some of the difficulties that schools and families are facing in the aftermath of the floods.
The Salesian added, “Salesian schools have continued to play an important part in the children’s daily lives and their connection to learning. We know they are dealing with much more than gaining an education. We aim to provide support for the whole person whether it’s providing supplies or setting up feeding programs. We want to make sure youth are prepared for school, so they can focus on their studies.”
