INDIA: DREAM project focuses on youth drug addiction

Project releases impact report to government in Kerala
(MissionNewswire) The Drug Rehabilitation Education and Mentoring Project (DREAM) released an impact study report related to the fight against drug abuse at the Press Club, Thiruvananthapuram, India. Since its launch in November 2021, the DREAM Project, an initiative by Bangalore Rural Educational and Development Society (BREADS), has empowered thousands of youth across 10 districts of Kerala through awareness, counseling, addiction services and rehabilitation, spreading hope and resiliency among vulnerable communities.
The study was conducted by Rajagiri College of Social Sciences in Kalamassery, and it was officially released to the Department of Social Justice, Government of Kerala. An event to mark the occasion was attended by Father Shalbin Kalanchery, vice provincial of the Salesian Province of Bangalore, alongside other distinguished guests.
The program commenced with a welcome address followed by an session on substance use and mental health. The release of the study was introduced by Father Philip Parakatt, state director of the DREAM Project, and a detailed presentation of the study’s findings was delivered by Dr. Reena Merin Cherian and her team from Rajagiri College.
In his keynote address, Fr. Kalanchery highlighted the Salesian commitment to empowering youth, while Father P. S. George, executive director of BREADS, emphasized the collective responsibility of society in combating substance abuse. A discussion panel followed.
A Salesian noted, “We have a collective commitment of civil society, government departments, and development organizations to build a drug-free future for Kerala’s youth. The DREAM Project continues to inspire hope and resilience, proving that strategic collaboration and unwavering dedication can transform lives and communities.”
Salesian programs in India are primarily focused on education. Salesian primary and secondary education helps youth prepare for later technical, vocational or university study. Other programs help to support poor youth and their families by meeting the basic needs of shelter, proper nutrition and medical care.
