INDIA: Don Bosco Society highlights innovative farming methods

Work of Salesian priest contributes to reviving paddy cultivation
(MissionNewswire) Don Bosco Society in Raia, India, highlighted the work of Father George Quadros during an event to launch the rainy season crop growing period known as Kharif. The Salesian priest is affectionately known as the “Paddy Man of Goa” for his decade-long contribution to reviving paddy cultivation.
In his address, Chief Minister Dr. Sawant congratulated Fr. Quadros and the Don Bosco Society for their work. He noted, “It is inspiring to witness how Fr. Quadros, who began with just 10,000 square meters of land a decade ago, has now revitalized over 40 lakh square meters, spanning the entire state of Goa.”
Sawant outlined an ambitious goal of cultivating 400 hectares of land over the next decade. Confident in Fr. Quadros’ dedication, Sawant expressed optimism that this target would be achieved ahead of schedule.
Father Clive Telles, provincial of the Salesian Province of Panjim, also praised Fr. Quadros’ dedication, comparing his work to the legacy of St. John Bosco. Fr. Telles commended Fr. Quadros for assembling a team of young professionals, training them in modern farming techniques and empowering them to provide cost-effective farming services to Goa’s agricultural community. He remarked, “Fr. Quadros has brought farmers back to their fields, ensuring that paddy cultivation is efficient and sustainable.”
The event also featured a live demonstration of mechanized farming equipment. Sawant piloted a drone used for spraying crops and operated a paddy sapling transplanter under the guidance of Fr. Quadros. The demonstrations highlighted the role of technology in making farming more efficient and sustainable.
To mark the occasion, new paddy seeds and pressure spraying equipment were distributed to deserving farmers, reaffirming Don Bosco Society’s commitment to empowering farmers, particularly those who are economically disadvantaged. Salesians continue to focus on training youth in modern farming techniques, providing them with access to machinery and promoting cost-effective cultivation methods to boost productivity and income.
