INDIA: Campus holds e-waste drive

Don Bosco Matunga campus in India held an electronic waste collection drive

Effort collects waste, raises awareness

INDIA

(MissionNewswire) The Don Bosco Matunga campus in India held an electronic waste collection drive on its campus in collaboration with GreenLine-Mumbai and Threco, The Recycling Company. E-waste is the fastest growing solid waste stream in the world contributing to a majority of waste entering India’s landfills. When e-waste is mixed with other waste materials in landfills, the chemicals from electronics leach into the land and water causing pollution which can lead to disastrous consequences to many.

A Salesian explained, “GreenLine hoped that with this collection drive, we would raise awareness about sustainable waste management and provide a real solution for people to drop off their e-waste in our bin which was then transported to Threco’s recycling unit in Khopoli where it was separated and recycled to produce useful products.”

With support from others, the drive was successful. The Salesian added, “We received a variety of e-waste and metal scrap items including desktop monitors, keyboards, wires, appliances, mobile phones, computer parts, and more. We managed to gather 36.1 kilograms worth of e-waste from our community. We also raised awareness about the reason behind this collection drive on our social media. We aim to continue working with Threco and in the future partner with other waste management entities to help our citizens to sustainably manage their waste and protect the environment.”

Salesians in India and around the globe have been developing initiatives like this focused on care for the environment. These initiatives come as a response to Pope Francis’ 2020 Laudato Si’, which had as its theme “Good Christians and Upright Citizens.” Pope Francis underlined the importance of education and training that will help youth shape a lifestyle and foster environmental responsibility.
