INDIA: 230 job seekers find employment at 2 Salesian job fairs

Salesians are considered one of the largest vocational and technical education providers in the world

INDIA

(MissionNewswire) Two Salesian educational institutes in India recently held job fairs to help graduating students find work in their chosen employment sector. In total, 230 students were hired as a result of these activities. Salesians are considered one of the largest vocational and technical education providers in the world. Salesians also help students with workforce development through life skills training, career assistance and job fairs such as these.

Don Bosco Job Placement Network India and Bosco Delhi, in association with Don Bosco Technical Institute, Okhla, New Delhi, organized one of the job fairs on June 25. More than 300 job seekers participated and 200 were provided job opportunities. Eleven recruiters from IT/ITES, printing & graphics, automobile manufacturing, and service sectors participated in the recruitment drive.

Following that event, a second job fair was held at Don Bosco College Golaghat, Assam, on June 27. Personnel from Omega Healthcare India Pvt Ltd gave a general orientation to the students about the IT/ITES sector’s contribution to the medical health care sector. Fifty graduates interviewed for jobs at the event and 30 candidates were hired.

“Salesian educational programs focus on helping vulnerable youth by providing access to educational opportunities that match the local employment needs,” said Father Gus Baek, director of Salesian Missions, the U.S. development arm of the Salesians of Don Bosco. “Around the globe, there are nearly 1,000 Salesian vocational, technical, professional and agricultural schools — with a focus on serving poor and needy youth.”

Access to professional training and workforce development services is highly valued in India. The country, which is home to 1.34 billion people (18 percent of the world’s population), will have overtaken China as the world’s most populous country by 2024, according to the World Economic Forum. While India has the world’s largest youth population, it has yet to capitalize on this, leaving some 30 percent of this population without employment, education or training.

India has the world’s fourth largest economy but more than 22 percent of the country lives in poverty. About 31 percent of the world’s multidimensionally poor children live in India, according to a report by the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative.

India’s youth face a lack of educational opportunities due to issues of caste, class and gender. Almost 44 percent of the workforce is illiterate and less than 10 percent of the working-age population has completed a secondary education. In addition, many secondary school graduates do not have the knowledge and skills to compete in today’s changing job market.
