(MissionNewswire) Salesian missionaries in Cayambe, Ecuador, celebrated the 25th anniversary of the Mitad del Mundo (Middle of the World) Maternity Clinic. The Salesian clinic has positively impacted thousands of women, children and families by offering quality medical care with compassion.

A Salesian noted, “Since its founding, the clinic has been much more than a health care facility — it has been a haven where women receive not only medical treatment but also emotional support and respect. With backing from the Salesian community, the health care workers, volunteers, and local leaders have nurtured a mission rooted in service and solidarity.”

The celebrations of the clinic began with a Catholic Mass presided over by Father Javier Herrán, director of the Salesian Cayambe community and founder of the clinic. Tributes were paid to individuals and institutions that supported the clinic’s growth. A special plaque was awarded to Fr. Herrán in recognition of his leadership and vision over 25 years.

Additionally, the Medal of Mary Help of Christians was given to all clinic staff — doctors, nurses, administrators and volunteers — for their tireless work in maternal and child health care.

Salesians provide social development and educational programs across Ecuador to help youth who are poor gain an education and the skills for later employment. The skills they learn ensure they are able to care for themselves and their families while being contributing members of their communities.

Ecuador is one of the most inequitable societies in the world, according to UNICEF. The richest 20% of the population receives almost 50% of the national income, while the poorest 20% receives only 5%. According to the World Food Programme, almost 26% of all children under age 5 have stunted growth, increasing to 31% in rural areas and 47% in Indigenous communities.
