(MissionNewswire) The Salesian Polytechnic University (UPS), located in Guayaquil, Ecuador, held the 10th International Congress of Science, Technology and Innovation for Society (CITIS 2024). The event brought together more than 1,000 participants, including exhibitors, teachers, students and guests. It offered workshops, conference sessions, a technological innovation fair and technical sessions, highlighting the commitment of its participants to build a more sustainable future.

CITIS 2024, recognized internationally for its contribution to scientific development, aims to promote the exchange of knowledge and experiences among participants. This year, the congress focused on key themes such as sustainability and the environment, information and telecommunications, and industry and mobility emphasis on new technological trends that are transforming and improving each of these sectors.

In his welcome address, Father Juan Cárdenas, rector of the university, said, “In the last 10 years, like UPS, this academic space seeks to offer a set of alternatives according to the changing needs of society. I invite you to dream and imagine global solutions to the social problems of engineering, articulated with other areas of knowledge. Let’s imagine together not only a new Ecuador but a new world. Faithful to the principle if we do not live to serve, we are not useful for living.”

The event was attended by renowned international experts who shared their research and experiences. Teachers and student researchers gathered to showcase their work at lectures and poster presentations.

Salesians provide social development and educational programs across Ecuador to help youth experiencing poverty gain an education and the skills for later employment. The skills they learn ensure they are able to care for themselves and their families while being contributing members of their communities.

Ecuador is one of the most inequitable societies in the world, according to UNICEF. The richest 20% of the population receives almost 50% of the national income, while the poorest 20% receives only 5%. According to the World Food Program, almost 26% of all children under age 5 have stunted growth, increasing to 31% in rural areas and 47% within Indigenous communities.
