ECUADOR: Group provides food, psychological support

Services benefit people living in vulnerable situations
(MissionNewswire) The Salesian Hand of Solidarity group assists people who are poor and most vulnerable in the Cristo Rey Parish community, located in La Tola district of Quito, Ecuador. Every month, the group utilizes the St. Francis of Assisi post-novitiate facility to volunteer their time to meet those in need while sharing experiences and praying together. A dedicated team of psychologists joins this effort.
Participants also receive a bag of food and essential items that helps to meet their basic needs and serves as a reminder that they are not alone. A Salesian noted, “This is concrete help symbolizing the community’s commitment to those in difficult situations, providing not only physical sustenance but also emotional and spiritual strength.”
Members of the group make home visits to each participant on Fridays. During these visits, bonds of friendship are created and the sense of community is strengthened.
The Salesian explained, “This work, which flourishes in the heart of the parish and the community, is a living example of the love and mercy of God manifested in the world. Through concrete actions and willing hearts, the Hand of Solidarity group brings the embrace of Christ to the most needy. The group not only contributes to alleviating material difficulties, but also sows hope and faith.”
Ecuador is one of the most inequitable societies in the world, according to UNICEF. The richest 20% of the population receives almost 50% of the national income, while the poorest 20% receives only 5%. According to the World Food Programme, almost 26% of all children under age 5 have stunted growth, increasing to 31% in rural areas and 47% in Indigenous communities.
