AMERICAS: Art festival highlights role of youth in communities

Social Salesian American Network holds ‘Youth, Art and Social Transformation’ festival

(MissionNewswire) Social Salesian American Network recently held the “Youth, Art and Social Transformation” festival, which highlighted 27 artistic works from youth from 14 Salesian provinces. Youth performed theater, dance, song, music, and circus acts. The event was held to highlight the role of youth in their communities and recognize their talents.

Youth from across the Americas attended the event. They came from Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Haiti, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela. The festival was attended by Salesians from different countries. One of the goals of the event was to show how Salesian education can help youth cultivate their dreams.

Most of the youth in Salesian schools and centers come from backgrounds of poverty. They often have few opportunities to attend school and turn their dreams into a reality. Salesian education provides them with the skills needed to find and retain stable employment. Education also helps them build confidence, tap into their potential and have hope for the future.

During the two-day festival, the young artists expressed themselves through the rhythms of the Colombian champeta or the cumbias of various countries, Andean dances, songs dedicated to Don Bosco, circus performances, puppets, theater, poetry, and percussion. Through art, they raised awareness about the social problems of youth.

One Salesian said, “Undoubtedly, there is much artistic and transformative potential in the children, adolescents, and youth of America’s social works. Social Salesian American Network works to relate, communicate, and feel like an inclusive and transformative family that generates opportunities for youth development.”

The 27 individual exhibitions and the live broadcast of both days of the festival are available on YouTube.
