Minibus is tool for independence, education

(MissionNewswire) The Harambèe Community, located in Casale Monferrato, Italy, takes in youth aged 11-18 who have suffered trauma and separation and are in vulnerable circumstances. The community purchased a new minibus thanks to an initiative promoted by Salesians for Social, with the support of Buzzi SpA and donors who have chosen to invest in the future of youth.

The minibus is not merely a means of transport, but also a tool for independence, education and inclusion. It will make it easier for youth to reach schools, sports facilities, training courses and extracurricular activities, as well as enable them to go on trips and holidays together.

Flora, a girl in the community, said, “It’s a wonderful thing for our family. When I get my driving license, I’d love to drive it. For me, it means a new beginning. It will take us on our adventures, perhaps to the mountains. I can’t wait.”

For 30 years, the Harambèe Community has been offering educational support, sporting and educational activities, psychological support, and training opportunities. Being able to travel safely and easily is essential, because of distances and inadequate public transport.

At a ceremony in celebration of the donation, Father Giorgio De Giorgi, provincial of the Salesian Province of Piedmont, Valle d’Aosta and Lithuania, recalled Harambèe’s history and the many lives it has supported over the years.

He said, “This minibus will enable young people to enjoy wonderful experiences, capable of filling their hearts with fresh air and new horizons.”

Father Francesco Preite, national president of Salesians for Social, said, “The real reason we are here is you, young people. We believe in you, and that is why we are committed to increasing the initiatives that foster hope, solidarity and inclusion. This gift makes encounters, activities and new opportunities for growth possible. It means telling every young person that they are not alone.”

Silvia Marzo, of Buzzi SpA, noted, “The young people will be able to play sports, enjoy more peaceful holidays and have experiences that are important for their development. This is the start of a shared journey.”

After the vehicle was blessed, Federico, the youngest member of the community, cut the ribbon to applause. The young people climbed aboard and set off on their inaugural journey. The celebration concluded with a minibus-shaped cake.

The initiative forms part of the national commitment of Salesians for Social to support Salesian family homes and youth who are the most vulnerable throughout Italy, transforming generosity into education and opportunities for the future.
