BELGIUM: Salesian construction students help rebuild chapel for town
Initiative provides practical experience for 10 students
(MissionNewswire) Students from Don Bosco Institute, located in Tournai, Belgium, took part in the reconstruction of a chapel, working to rebuild its original appearance. A small chapel had fallen into disrepair, and the Rumes Town Council asked the Salesian students to help lend a hand, putting their new skills into practice.
Before launching the project, the council had to track down the heirs of the family who had commissioned the chapel’s construction and obtain permission to restore it. Once authorization had been granted, the Salesian school, which is renowned for its technical and vocational education in the construction sector, was brought on board. Ten fifth-year students, led by their teacher Samuel Rooryck, took part in the work.
A Salesian explained, “The initiative provided a valuable practical experience, enabling the students to apply the skills they had learned at school in a real-world setting. Due to the severe deterioration of the original structure, it was necessary to demolish it and rebuild it from scratch.”
In recognition of the project’s significance and the quality of the work carried out, the Rumes Town Council paid tribute to the students and their teachers, publicly thanking them for their contribution to the preservation of local heritage.
