Volunteers are cornerstone of programs

(MissionNewswire) Salesian institutions across Spain are continuing their educational activities throughout the summer with a wide range of recreational activities for youth. These programs are a continuation of the educational and pastoral work that the Salesians carry out throughout the year in schools, youth centers, parishes and social initiatives.

The summer programs include summer camps, educational courses, technology camps, international exchanges, and activities centered on the Itinerary of Education in the Faith and more. It is estimated that the Salesian summer initiatives will attract more than 20,000 participants.

These initiatives combine the work of professionals with the involvement of volunteers, many of whom were themselves participants in these socio-educational programs years ago.

A Salesian said, “One of the cornerstones of these programs is the commitment of 3,700 young leaders and Salesians. They devote a significant part of their holidays to organizing activities and supporting groups. Their work is entirely voluntary and constitutes one of the largest youth volunteering networks linked to the educational and pastoral sectors in Spain.”

During the summer months, the young leaders also take part in training programs, such as courses to obtain qualifications as youth leaders or recreation coordinators. This year, Turin, Italy, will host the National Camp Bosco, a gathering of youth from the Salesian Youth Movement from across Spain and Portugal at the sites where Don Bosco and Mother Mazzarello lived. Close to 700 participants are expected.

One special experience for youth leaders is missionary volunteering. Around a hundred young adults will travel to countries in Africa and Latin America to support the Salesian centers in these regions. Destinations include Equatorial Guinea, Honduras, Peru and Angola, among others.
