TANZANIA: Salesian missionaries construct new provincial house thanks to donor funding from Salesian Missions
Province one of newest Salesian provinces in the world
(MissionNewswire) Salesian missionaries in the St. Artemide Zatti Province of Tanzania have the funding for construction of a new provincial house thanks to donor funding from Salesian Missions, the U.S. development arm of the Salesians of Don Bosco. The project is partially finished with construction still underway.
To date, the ground work, roofing, and walls have been completed, internal flooring and plastering have been done, and the electrical work and plumbing have been added.
The province is one of the newest Salesian provinces in the world. It was officially established in September 2023. Currently, the province has 135 confreres who are either working or pursuing studies both within and outside the province. As a newly established province, it has a predominantly young membership with many confreres in initial formation and higher education.
Don Bosco Oysterbay in Dar es Salaam serves as the seat of the provincial superior and his council. There was an urgent need to expand the residence and related facilities to better serve the province and its members.
The Oysterbay community lacked sufficient accommodations and facilities to host Salesians who visit the provincial house, particularly young confreres who frequently come to the community during holidays, breaks, meetings, and other provincial activities.
When finished, the expansion will include the construction of 35 additional rooms, a chapel, a visitors’ lounge, a small kitchen and offices for the various provincial commissions. These facilities are essential for strengthening the Salesian identity, fostering family spirit, and enhancing the sense of belonging among confreres and members of the Salesian Family.
A Salesian explained, “The proposed expansion will significantly strengthen the province’s capacity to carry out its pastoral, educational, and vocational mission while responding effectively to the needs of its growing membership and apostolic activities.”
