(MissionNewswire) Salesian missionaries had the funding for the renovation and repair of a dilapidated chapel in Gutuhatu, a village in the Khunti District of Jharkhand, India, thanks to donor funding from Salesian Missions, the U.S. development arm of the Salesians of Don Bosco. The project strengthened unity among 157 Catholic families, including more than 900 Catholics.

Gutuhatu is a remote, rural village located in hilly terrain. The local economy is highly marginalized and reliant on traditional, subsistence-level primary activities. The local population is predominantly belonging to the Munda tribe.

Due to a lack of year-round employment, a vast majority of the population works as seasonal daily-wage laborers. The village faces significant gaps in essential services, including unreliable electricity, limited clean drinking water access that is mostly dependent on community hand pumps, and a lack of accessible healthcare and higher educational institutions. While male literacy is moderate, female literacy is critically low, impacting broader community development and social mobility.

The new chapel is fully equipped for Catholic services and provides a place for priests to meet with community members. It also offers a renovated bathroom. The people of the village generously contributed local materials such as bamboo, sand, and stone chips, and many villagers also offered free labor for the construction. Although the work was delayed due to bad weather and difficult conditions, the people remained united, hopeful, and determined.

The completed chapel now stands as a testimony of 100 years of Catholic faith and will continue to serve future generations. Father Nestor Guria, who was responsible for the project, and the Catholics of Gutuhatu expressed their gratitude to the donors of Salesian Missions who made this possible.

A stakeholder explained, “At first, we wondered if we could gather enough resources to see it through, which made us a little anxious. But when we saw the structural reinforcements, the beautiful improvements to the altar and the active involvement of the leaders, our worries vanished. We were filled with joy seeing a dignified house of prayer finally being built for Gutuhatu. This excitement spread quickly through word of mouth, uniting local families in a shared sense of spiritual renewal.”
