PALESTINE: Salesians launch new school in Khallet Taha for 40 students
Children have safe place to study, grow
(MissionNewswire) The Salesian School in Khallet Taha, a Palestinian* community in the South Hebron Hills in the West Bank, now has 40 students attending this new school. This is a significant milestone in a challenging environment where until recently students were forced to walk miles a day to access education. The school was built as part of the “Juzoor – A School for Freedom” project, promoted by the Salesian International Volunteering for Development (VIS).
The project is made by possible with the help of several organizations from the Piedmont region of Italy including the Toni Lucci School of Peace in Bra, the Bra Youth Council, and the Cuneo Network for Palestine, and with the patronage from the Municipality of Bra, as well as a network of Italian and Palestinian partners. The initiative mobilized more than 500 donors, 80% of whom were families, students and small groups. The bridge between Italy and Palestine has been built on trust, responsibility and participation.
A Salesian explained, “Construction began in November 2025 and took shape rapidly, becoming a powerful symbol. Salesians were building while destruction raged all around. The building comprises four classrooms, a nursery area, facilities and an internal courtyard. It’s a simple yet essential environment that provides children with a safe place to study and grow.”
The Salesian continued, “Today, those classrooms are filled with voices, books and smiles. Girls and boys are sitting at their desks, lined up in the courtyard and together with their teachers. The school is an investment not only in education but in dignity, protection and hope for the future.”
The project is already looking ahead, with new initiatives planned, including psychological support, pediatric care and the construction of a second school in the Yatta area. Another school, Aisha Khalil School, is already established in the Yatta district near the hills of Masafer Yatta to provide opportunity to youth who might otherwise not have access to education.
