ECUADOR: School canteen provides daily meals for 60 youth

Meals help ensure youth continue to attend school

ECUADOR

(MissionNewswire) The Mamma Margarita School canteen, run by the Salesian Project North Coast Foundation in Esmeraldas, Ecuador, provides daily balanced meals to 60 youth who are at risk of social exclusion. The meals contribute to their well-being, school performance, and social support in a safe environment where they can also strengthen their personal skills and social relationships.

Since its launch in August 2025, the canteen has been offering a nutritious and balanced lunch that promotes physical and cognitive development. Youth who are part of the feeding program are connected to the Mother of the Savior Reference Center and live in conditions of poverty.

A Salesian explained, “The center’s educational team identifies the needs of youth, supports their growth, and offers concrete responses to families to ensure youth continue to attend school, improve their academic performance, and participate in the project’s educational spaces.”

The canteen relies on the support of local and international institutions for operation. With their intervention, the necessary resources for infrastructure, equipment and food supplies have been made available. The Salesian foundation provides coordination, fundraising, and monitoring and evaluation in order to ensure sustainability over time.

Salesians also offer food education that promotes healthy habits and hygiene with the aim of enabling youth to share these good practices in their homes. The participation of families, through awareness-raising and support activities, reinforces the community impact.

The Salesian added, “With this canteen, Salesians reaffirm their commitment to the protection of children and adolescents, especially in the poorest areas. The decent nutrition, educational support and comprehensive assistance that children receive help to build an environment of hope that transforms their reality and opens up opportunities for the future.”

Salesians provide social development and educational programs across Ecuador to help youth who are poor gain an education and the skills for later employment. The skills they learn ensure they are able to care for themselves and their families while being contributing members of their communities.

Ecuador is one of the most inequitable societies in the world, according to UNICEF. The richest 20% of the population receives almost 50% of the national income, while the poorest 20% receives only 5%. According to the World Food Programme, almost 26% of all children under age 5 have stunted growth, increasing to 31% in rural areas and 47% in Indigenous communities.
