UKRAINE: 4 years after start of war, Salesians remain committed to education and aid for people impacted
Salesian schools, youth centers continue to operate
(MissionNewswire) Salesian missionaries continue to help support the people of Ukraine* four years after the war began. The war has transformed the lives of millions of people and affected an entire generation of children. They have faced destroyed schools, interrupted lessons, forced displacement, and constant power and heating cuts.
Salesian missionaries have maintained a constant commitment to youth, ensuring access to education as an essential tool for protection and hope. Over the past four years, Salesian schools and youth centers have continued to operate, adapting to security conditions, setting up shelters and ensuring the continuity of educational programs even during the harshest winter months.
Father Mykhaylo Chaban, superior of the Salesian Vice-Province of Mary Help of Christians, said, “The aid we have received and continue to receive from all over the world gives us the hope and support needed to face the challenges in times of war, especially during the cold winter. Thanks to the solidarity of thousands of people, we have light and heat to live on, and many children can go to school.”
Humanitarian aid remains crucial for thousands of Ukrainian citizens. Salesian missionaries travel to areas near the front lines to distribute food, blankets, generators and fuel, supporting families who remain in particularly vulnerable areas. Salesian support has enabled Ukrainians to feel support even in the most isolated areas.
“In these four years of war, it is the youngest who have been most affected. For them, education not only imparts knowledge, but also offers stability, confidence and a future. We remain committed to them and our appeal for peace,” said Father Luis Manuel Moral, director of the Salesian Mission Office in Madrid.
Since the beginning of the war, Salesian Missions and Salesian organizations around the globe have supported thousands of people with projects and activities aimed at alleviating the situation for those in Ukraine and those who have fled to neighboring countries.
