Salesians aim to build new primary school

(MissionNewswire) Mission Don Bosco, the Salesian Mission Office in Turin, Italy, was once again the recipient of support from the “Christmas Concert in the Vatican”, now in its 33rd year. Salesians provide the support generated to the education of youth in Côte-Matève, near Pointe-Noire in the Republic of the Congo*.

Côte-Mateve has a high population density, but lacks drinking water, electricity, school facilities, health centers and public transport systems. Youth, who represent the largest segment of the population, see their rights systematically denied. For many, attending school is a inaccessible and the current school network is unable to respond to the growing demand. There are too few buildings, insufficient teachers and inadequate environments.

In Côte-Matève, Salesians want to build a new primary school, capable of accommodating at least 350 students, aged 6-12, who come from socio-economically vulnerable backgrounds. The school will provide them with a better learning environment, a safe structure and appropriate teaching materials. The school complex will include 10 classrooms with a capacity of 35 students per classroom, offices, a teachers’ lounge and coordination spaces.

Ngimbi is one of the 350 children who will be housed in the primary school that Don Bosco’s missionaries want to build in Côte-Matève.

Father Daniel Antúnez, president of Mission Don Bosco, said, “Ngimbi is faced with new prospects. He was given promises in the past that were not kept, but now he sees that he can overcome his vulnerable condition. It is up to us to allow him to cross that invisible wall that separates him from hope and to ensure continuity of care. We thank everyone who participated in the Christmas concert and all donors who are showing boys like Ngimbi there is hope for the future.”
